Writing & Reading 1 helps younger elementary school students build confidence and competence in the core skills of academic and creative writing and in reading and enjoying classic works of literature. In the reading portion of the course, students will read two landmark novels for young people, Beverly Cleary's The Mouse and the Motorcycle, and E.B. White's Charlotte's Web, both of which delight readers with stories of adventure and inter-species friendship. A vocabulary component will strengthen students' lexicon and reading and writing acumen. In the writing portion of the course, students will develop their foundational writing skills through a variety of projects, including a how-to guide, biographical sketch, fairy tale, Shakespearean sonnet, and report.
