Designed to support 9th-10th graders as they develop competency in English, this course provides indispensable engagement with academic vocabulary, a strong foundation in correct grammar (with a focus on SAT grammar skills), in-depth instruction in reading skills from a variety of texts and genres, and teachings in the most effective principles and practices of effective academic writing, especially the aptitudes needed for AP English courses commonly taken in 11th and 12th grades. Students will enrich their learning and experience by reading two celebrated novels, Erich Maria remarque's All Quiet on the Western Front and Anthony Doerr's All the Light We Cannot See, allowing them to explore the novel form and the history of WWI and WWII through story. A variety of lessons, assignments, and extensive instructor feedback on student assignments will challenge and encourage students, building skills that will benefit them throughout life.
