Designed to support more advanced 9th-10th graders as they develop competency in English, this course provides indispensable engagement with academic vocabulary, a strong foundation in correct grammar (with a focus on SAT grammar skills), in-depth instruction in reading skills from a variety of texts and genres, an introduction to literary theory, and teachings in the most effective principles and practices of effective academic writing, especially the aptitudes needed for AP English courses commonly taken in 11th and 12th grades. Students will enrich their learning and experience by reading two celebrated works of literature, Charles Portis's True Grit and Thornton Wilder's play Our Town. A variety of lessons, assignments, and extensive instructor feedback on student assignments will challenge and encourage students, building skills that will benefit them throughout life.
